Robbie Keane looks poised to become the new manager of LA Galaxy.
And the former Republic of Ireland star has made no secret of his desire to return to the club where he spent five years as a player.
“It’s a place that means a lot to me,” said Keane in July, when quizzed about his interest in taking charge one day.
“Galaxy is a team that I love. The people are great, my family loved the country and my youngest lad was born there.
“So down the line, yes, absolutely. If that opportunity came up, I would sit down and speak with them.”
And according to reports in America today, it looks like that time has come for the Dubliner.
Galaxy are in a bind after losing six games in-a-row with another six games to go in the MLS season.
Keane was Galaxy’s star striker between 2011 and 2016, but the retired 40-year-old is now carving out his coaching career.
He was assistant to Mick McCarthy with the Republic of Ireland but despite being under contract, was not appointed to Stephen Kenny’s coaching staff.
While with Ireland, he double-jobbed for a spell by landing the No 2 role at Middlesbrough but left when Jonathan Woodgate was sacked in June.
Quizzed in July about his next move, Keane told an MLS podcast: “I’m a student of the game and I’m always learning and studying people.
“I’ve been an assistant for a couple of years and had two experiences, one with Mick McCarthy and Ireland and then with Jonathan (Woodgate).
“I’m learning my trade and, down the road, of course I want to be a manager.”
