Republic of Ireland legend Paul McGrath slams Australia and defends Novak Djokovic after Australian Open visa row

Republic of Ireland legend Paul McGrath has leaped to the defence of tennis star Novak Djokovic after the world number one was denied entry to Australia.

Reigning Australian Open champion Djokovic is Down Under to defend his crown and came under criticism after he claimed to have received an exemption to be allowed into the country despite his vaccine status.

But the world number one could now be deported from Australia after there was a problem with his visa application.

The Australian Border Force earlier confirmed that Djokovic's visa application had been cancelled after he travelled to the country after announcing he had received a medical exemption from Covid-19 vaccination rules to compete in the tournament.

That, however, was not sufficient for border officials with regard to entry into a country that has strict entry requirements. Djokovic, 34, was held for several hours at the airport after flying to Melbourne before ultimately being turned away.

His lawyers appealed against the decision with a verdict expected today, but it has now been delayed until 10am Melbourne time on Monday.

Djokovic will remain in an Australian refugee detention hotel until the outcome is decided.

And Ireland legend McGrath took to social media to defend Djokovic and his decision to keep his vaccine records private.

He said on Twitter: "Djokovic, so this kid wants to keep his vaccine records to himself and his doctors.

"Not allowed in the New and improved Australia, Jasus Christ why don’t you lot give the Slam to the seventh Player who shows up. #itsajoke"

But McGrath joked that other players wouldn't be too upset about Djokovic's exclusion as it might help their Grand Slam chances.

Replying to another Twitter user, McGrath said: "Well to be fair, as one of the other players, I’d give him no help either, the mans won the bloody thing last year, why would you want to Aid last years winner . Ruin your slim enough chance"

The Australian Open is set to begin on Monday, 17 January and was won last year by Djokovic as he beat Daniil Medvedev in the final.

Djokovic is still listed as bookmakers favourite despite his uncertain visa status.
