Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu linked with summer move to Everton

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is a summer target for Everton, according to reports.

Bazunu, 20, has returned to parent club Manchester City following an impressive loan spell at League One side Portsmouth but he now faces a big decision over his long-term future as Premier League clubs eye a potential swoop.

Everton have been keeping tabs on the former Shamrock Rovers star and the Merseyside club have kept a regular watch on him over the course Portsmouth's season.

With current number one Jordan Pickford not guaranteed of his future as first-choice goalkeeper, Frank Lampard may yet make a move for Bazunu.

As well as his impressive performances for Portsmouth, Bazunu's stock has risen internationally in the past year after receiving his first call-up to Stephen Kenny's Republic of Ireland squad back in March of 2021.

Subsequent to his senior debut in a 1-0 defeat to Luxembourg in March 2021, Bazunu made nine further appearances for the Boys in Green and he proved to be a shining light during a particularly worrying period in Stephen Kenny's tenure as his saves, coupled with his natural ball-playing ability, caught the attention of Irish football fans.

Southampton and Sheffield United are also interested in his signature, while newly-promoted Bournemouth have not ruled themselves out of the running either.

Saints' current first-choice goalkeeper Fraser Forster is now 34 and that may amplify their interest in pursuing Bazunu.

Bazunu joined Manchester City from Shamrock Rovers back in 2019 and although he has spoken of his desire to become the Sky Blues' number one, the imperious Ederson remains stood in his way.

The Brazilian has scooped the Premier League's Golden Glove award for most clean sheets the last two years running and his all-action 'sweeper-keeper' style is in itself a key ingredient to the success of Pep Guardiola's side.

The 28-year-old recently signed a contract extension keeping him at City until at least 2026, and thus Bazunu may be forced into a big decision on his future sooner rather than later.

The carrot of first-team football will likely be a deciding factor for the young Irishman if he is to depart.

Failing a permanent move, Bazunu will more than likely head out on loan to a club at a higher level - a scenario which could set the cat among the pigeons for Championship clubs.
