Republic of Ireland fans react to Mick McCarthy's commentary and his love of crosses

Mick McCarthy was somewhat of a surprise choice of co-commentator for the Republic of Ireland's UEFA Nations League clash with Bulgaria.

Stephen Kenny replaced the Yorkshire man as Ireland boss back in April and was having his first game in charge on Thursday night in Sofia.

Shocked Ireland fans initially took to Twitter to reveal their surprise at hearing McCarthy's voice on Sky Sports' commentary for their country's Nations League clash with Bulgaria.

One said: "Mick McCarthy as commentator? This will be interesting."

Another added: "What on earth is Mick McCarthy doing co commentating on this game???"

But as the night went on, it was clear what McCarthy would be telling the players to do if he was still manager - cross the ball.

And many fans picked up the numerous times he mentioned the word 'crosses'.

One tweeted: "I think Mick McCarthy likes crosses."

Another said: "If I hear Mick McCarthy say the word crosses one more time."

Someone else added: "Mick McCarthy just talking about crosses."

Another commented: "Ireland need to put in more crosses, that’s how to break down this team says Mick McCarthy....as Adam Idah plays in Connolly through the heart of the defence."
