Republic of Ireland fans manage to get into ground for Portugal clash despite away supporters ban

A number of Republic of Ireland fans managed to get into their country's clash with Portugal in Faro despite a ban on away supporters.

FIFA and UEFA have banned all away supporters from this month's World Cup qualifiers, but that didn't stop some Irish fans from getting into the Estádio Algarve for the World Cup qualifier.

Some posed for pictures with their tickets outside the stadium ahead of the game, while others wore Cristiano Ronaldo masks.

The Portuguese attacker, who recently completed his move back to Manchester United, is aiming to break Iran forward Ali Daei's international scoring record of 109 with a goal against the Boys in Green.

Meanwhile, Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah were handed the task of taking Ireland’s threat to Portugal.

The 21-year-old Brighton striker and his Norwich counterpart, 20, who were ruled out of last October’s Euro 2020 play-off semi-final clash with Slovakia by Covid-19 protocols, were handed starts as the FAI confirmed that fellow frontman Shane Long had tested positive for coronavirus.

Connolly, skipper Seamus Coleman and midfielders Jeff Hendrick and Jamie McGrath were included in four changes to the side which drew 0-0 with Hungary in a friendly in June.
