Republic of Ireland fans furious at ITV for anthem subtitle gaffe

Republic of Ireland fans were left furious by ITV last night before the 3-0 defeat to England at Wembley.

The station somehow managed to subtitle the words of Ireland's Call on screen during Amhran na bhFiann prior to the 8pm kick-off.

It led to a huge amount of angry comments online by furious supporters, reports the Irish Mirror.

One said: "Ireland’s call is our rugby anthem not our national anthem. Totally different song."

Another added: "Did they actually use Ireland’s Call subtitles while playing Amhran na bhFiann?"

Someone else commented: "Everyone laughing about @itvfootball subtitling Amhrán na bhfiann with Ireland’s call subtitles This isn’t funny."

One other fan tweeted: "@ITVSport your subtitles are 100% wrong. The subtitles for Ireland's Call isn't the translation of Amhráin na bhFiann. The latter is our National Anthem not Ireland's Call!"

Another Twitter user said: "The Irish national anthem was a disgrace tonight at Wembley. They had Ireland ‘s Call lyrics on the big screen"

"Wow ITV, subtitling Ireland’s Call when Amhrán na bhFiann is playing...for a Republic of Ireland team...awkward," read another comment.

And if fans of the Boys in Green were angry before the game, they probably weren't feeling much better after it as Stephen Kenny's side were thrashed in London.

England beat Ireland for the first time since 1985 as goals by Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin secured a 3-0 win in a friendly at an empty Wembley Stadium on Thursday.

Maguire, wearing the captain's armband, headed his side in front after 18 minutes and Sancho's fine finish put the hosts in complete control before halftime.

Calvert-Lewin's well-taken penalty after the break added some gloss for the hosts as England sharpened up for their crucial Nations League clashes against Belgium and Iceland.

Ireland face Wales in Cardiff on Sunday before hosting Bulgaria at the the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday.
