Republic of Ireland fans angry over Nations League games not being shown on free-to-air TV

Republic of Ireland fans are furious that they can't watch their country's UEFA Nations League games on free-to-air TV.

Sky Sports have the rights to show the matches involving the Boys in Green, meaning the likes of RTE and Virgin Media aren't allowed to broadcast them live.

A number of fans have voiced their frustration over not being able to watch the games.

One posted online:  "Irish fans are rightfully unhappy that the UEFA Nations League games aren’t broadcast on RTÉ."

He added: "All Ireland games should be shown on free-to-air TV across the island."

Someone else commented: "Very disappointing that the Ireland game won’t be shown live on ordinary TV."

Another fan finds himself in a tough situation as he doesn't have Sky Sports and thinks he wouldn't be able to stomach a €9 meal in a pub after eating his dinner at home.

He said: "Ireland game on Sky Sports which I don't have, can't go to the pub because I'd have to eat another big meal after Sunday dinner. Life just gets worse."

A number of supporters also criticised Sky's coverage of Ireland's 1-1 draw with Bulgaria after the channel showed interviews from Wales' game with Finland on the same channel.

One commented: "Sky’s analysis of the Ireland game is to interview Ryan Giggs. What the f*** is going on?"

Someone else said: "Trying to watch the Ireland game on Sky Sports yet all they talk about is Wales."

Another added: "Fascinating seeing Sky Sports bunch the Bulgaria vs Ireland and Finland vs Wales coverage together in one show. I wouldn't be a fan I have to say."

But others explained the reason the games are not shown on free-to-air TV is quite simply because Sky were the highest bidders.

One said: "I wish someone would sit down the "why isn't the Ireland game on RTE" brigade and actually explain to them how TV rights deals work."

Another posted:"Let’s all say it together. SKY HAVE THE RIGHTS TO IRELAND GAMES IN THE NATIONS LEAGUE. Not the fault of Virgin or RTÉ that a much bigger station outbid them."
