Republic of Ireland Euro 2020 permutations ahead of Switzerland and Denmark games

A bore 0-0 draw in Tbilisi was a blow for Ireland's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020 - but it has made the situation a little clearer.

Ireland know that a win over either Switzerland in Geneva on Tuesday or three points against Denmark at the Aviva next month will guarantee them a place at next summer's finals.

But if Mick McCarthy's side fail to pick up three points from their final two games, it looks in all likelihood that they will be out.

This is because Switzerland are expected, at the least, to bank 14 points by beating Georgia at home and Gibraltar on the road. The Swiss, of course, can also top the group on 17 points by defeating Ireland.

Denmark are expected to hit 15 points with a win over Gibraltar tomorrow before they travel to Dublin.

But if Ireland fail to beat Switzerland in Geneva, they will still qualify with a win over Denmark at the Aviva owing to their head-to-head record over the Danes (Ireland drew with Denmark in Copenhagen).

In sum, it is still in Ireland's hands, but two draws and an undefeated qualifying campaign, is not likely to be enough.

The Boys in Green need three points from their final two matches.
