Republic of Ireland Covid rules: Government set to announce reopening of nightclubs from October 22

The government in the Republic of Ireland is expected to announce that masks will be required in certain settings such as public transport, healthcare and in retail after October 22.

On the same date, nightclubs are expected to reopen under the plans signed off by Cabinet on Tuesday, reports the Irish Mirror.

There are currently no plans to reopen nightclubs in Northern Ireland - though the move in the Republic, coupled with the situation in England, is likely to put pressure on Stormont.

A Government source said high-risk activities like the reopening of nightclubs will go ahead once Covid conditions are stable.

On October 22 - just over 50 days - the Republic of Ireland will see the final day that all legal restrictions are set to be lifted on society and the economy.

The plan will be revealed by Taoiseach Micheál Martin at around 6pm and the Cabinet meeting has now concluded.

As suggested by several ministers, masks will continue to be required for certain sectors but not for outdoors and indoor private settings.

This is expected to last until springtime next year.

The Government is also expected to place an emphasis on the use of rapid Covid tests.
