Reports: Saints worked out Rutgers cornerback Isaiah Wharton

The New Orleans Saints recently worked out Rutgers cornerback Isaiah Wharton, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network and Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Wharton is a popular prospect in the 2019 NFL Draft, having also recently worked out with the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans, per reports.

Wharton had a solid but unspectacular pro day, weighing in at 6-foot-0, 200 pounds and running the 40-yard dash in the mid-4.6’s at Rutgers’ pro day. His senior season capped off four years as a starter on the Scarlet Knights’ defense, recording 196 career tackles (139 solo), 13.5 tackles for loss of yards, and 31 pass deflections (four interceptions). He’s known for competing hard in man coverage and should be available in the later rounds of the draft.

The Saints appear set at cornerback, with starters penciled in at the top three spots in Marshon Lattimore, Eli Apple, and Patrick Robinson. P.J. Williams is an experienced fourth man on the depth chart. Newly-signed punt returner Marcus Sherels is listed at cornerback but shouldn’t play much with the defense, focusing on special teams. Any cornerback the Saints add (Wharton or otherwise) will have to outplay special teams coverage ace Justin Hardee for a roster spot.
