Reports of smoke and fire coming through pavement after underground explosion in Clifton

An underground explosion in Bristol saw smoke and fire come through the pavement in a city street.

The electrical fire happened under the road in Clifton and caused more than a thousand homes to lose power.

Emergency services were called to a fire on Royal York Crescent in Clifton, after the explosion caused a major power outage yesterday evening (Monday May 31) at 8:54pm.

On arrival, the Bedminster Fire & rescue crew determined that the cause of the fire was electrical and it occurred beneath the pavement.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service Control tweeted at the time:

"Crews from @AFRSBedminstere are dealing with reporters of smoke and fire coming from the pavement in Clifton. They're working alongside @ASpolice and the electricity board."

Avon and Somerset Police were also in attendance and the incident was left in the hands of Western Power Distribution.

Western Power said the outage left 1646 Clifton homes without power and caused surrounding areas to experience short power blips.

A spokesman from Western Power said: " At 9:50pm yesterday evening (Monday May 31) we had a trip in the Clifton area.

"An underground cable had faulted which caused some pavement slabs to be lifted.

"1646 customers went off supply but all were restored within 30 minutes of the incident."
