Reports of person in canal near shopping centre in Altrincham prompts major emergency response

There was a major response from emergency services in Altrincham this afternoon after reports of a person in the Bridgewater Canal.

Police, fire and the ambulance service all rushed to the scene on Manchester Road near the Altrincham Retail Park at around 3pm.

A spokesperson for the fire service said they were called to rescue a person from the canal.

However, it is believed by the time crews arrived from Sale and Altrincham, the casualty was already out of the water.

The incident lasted for around 40 minutes.

No further details on the casualty were available.

The spokesperson said: "We were called at 3.0.6pm to an incident on Davenport Lane in Altrincham.

"Crews from Sale and Altrincham attended for about 40 minutes.

"It looks like a casualty was out of the water before we arrived."

The incident is now closed.
