Northumbria Police are searching houses in the West End of Newcastle after reports of a gun being fired.
The force has picked up intelligence that a firearm may have been used in Elswick in the early hours of the morning.
A spokesperson said no incident had been reported to the police.
There have been no reports of injuries in connection with the incident.
Officers raided "a number of addresses" in the Elswick area to carry out enquiries in the aftermath.
Police are still probing the incident and are calling on witnesses with information about what may have happened to come forward.
A spokesperson said: "An investigation to establish exactly what has happened is ongoing and nobody has been arrested at this stage."
