Reports of fireworks on New Year's Eve in Canberra

ACT Police received two reports of fireworks being set off on New Year's Eve as the territory was under a total fire ban.

One report came from the south, and another from the north but no fires were ignited, ACT Police superintendent Jason Kennedy said.

No arrests were made in relation to the fireworks.

The total fire ban caused the tradition New Year's Eve fireworks to be cancelled in Canberra, and extreme weather also forced the cancellation of wider celebrations, which created a subdued mood in the capital.

Mr Kennedy said there was a noticeable decrease in the number of partygoers, with thick smoke haze blanketing the city from Tuesday evening.

But there were some revellers who partied in venues across the city into the morning. Mr Kennedy said 16 people were taken into custody overnight.

Of the 16, nine were taken to protective custody for being intoxicated and disorderly. One person was arrested for assault and another for hindering police and knife possession.

Mr Kennedy said overall police were "really happy" with the behaviour.

"The officers on the ground have reported the crowd on the ground was very jovial and happy," he said.

Police are also investigating a suspicious house fire in Gilmore that started on Tuesday night.

About 11pm police were called to the house fire, which was extinguished by ACT Fire and Rescue.

Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information about the fire to come forward.
