Police shoot dead armed man in western Sydney after shots fired at officers

Police have shot dead a man in western Sydney after he fired several shots into Penrith Police Station, injuring an officer.

Gunshots have also been fired into St Mary's Police Station, but it was unclear whether it was from the same man or a second gunman.

Both police stations remain in lockdown as heavily armed tactical officers work to secure the area.

The injured police officer has been taken in an ambulance to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

The ABC has been told it is not terror related, but the investigation is in its early stages.

Residents and motorists are being urged to avoid the area.
