Reports that Jeremy Corbyn’s son, Seb, will stand for Labour at the general election have been dismissed by sources close to the 25-year-old.
It had been suggested that Mr Corbyn junior, who is currently chief of staff to Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, was hoping to secure the safe Labour seat of Liverpool Walton.
The constituencies current MP, Steve Rotherham, who has served as a aide to the Labour leader, is standing down to focus on his bid to become mayor of Liverpool.
A source close to Seb Corbyn told The Independent the story was “nonsense”.
His father's office added that it was “categorically untrue”.
A Labour spokesperson said: “We’re not giving a running commentary on selections” when they were asked about Mr Corbyn's potential candidacy and that of his father's political secretary, Katy Clark.
Liverpool Walton is one of the safest Labour seats in the country, with a majority of more than 27,000.
Seb Corbyn has worked for Mr McDonnell since graduating from Cambridge University in 2013. Upon Jeremy Corbyn’s election as Labour leader in 2015, his son stepped up to become the Shadow Chancellor’s chief of staff.
Labour’s National Executive Committee has agreed that it will take control of the process of selecting parliamentary candidates, working alongside regional boards to ensure vacancies are filled.
Officials believe the usual system of party members being invited to choose a candidate in their area is impractical because of the short timeframe for the 8 June election.
