The government of Somalia ordered the deportation of two foreign journalists at the behest of the the Somali journalists' union, reports Africa.com.
The two reporters - a Ugandan and a Ghanian - were arrested at a hotel in Mogadishu for allegedly entering the country illegally and engaging in "unauthorised journalism activities".
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) had protested about the pair making "unlawful use" of the union's name.
According to the deputy minister of information, Abdullahi Olad Rooble, the arrests and deportations were aimed at defending the rights of Somali journalists.
The NUSOJ welcomed the ministry's move and called on international media organisations to collaborate with the recognised media organisations.
