Reporter jailed on defamation charge

A reporter has been jailed for three months in the Democratic Republic of Congo for "defamation and damaging allegations" in a story he wrote for the Kinshasa-based weekly La Cite Africaine. The journalist, Popol Ntula Vita, must also pay a fine amounting to £3,300. He was prosecuted for accusing tax officials of misappropriating funds when issuing of vehicle licence plates.
