Reported 17-goal Leeds United target turns nose up at January transfer despite League One threat

Leeds United's current injury crisis has led Marcelo Bielsa to be asked questions over reinforcements in the January transfer window.

While specific names have been few and far between, one such individual who has been speculatively linked with Leeds is Reading's John Swift.

The Championship midfielder has recorded nine assists and scored eight goals in the division this season.

He has scored four more goals than any other Reading player, and registered seven more assists than any of his teammates, underlining his importance to the Royals.

Swift's form has been something of a blessing and a curse for the Berkshire club, as the 26-year-old is out of contract next summer.

Given recent displays and his 17-goal contribution, Swift has attracted interest from suitors higher up the Football League pyramid and the Premier League. Reading currently sit 21st in the Championship table.

Considering his importance to the side, a January departure would significantly hinder Reading's attempts to remain in the second tier.

As per the Reading Chronicle, Swift has turned down the opportunity to leave the club in the winter transfer window, intent on seeing out his contract at the club before moving on at the end of the season.

"Swift himself is not interested in leaving Reading in the upcoming transfer window," the Chronicle reports, in light of 'Premier League interest' in the player.

That does not rule out the possibility of a substantial bid being accepted by the club in January, though. Next month will be the last time Reading will be able to garner a fee for the influential midfielder who has spent six years at the Select Cars Leasing Stadium.

According to Reading's 2019/20 financial reports, the club presided over a concerning 211% wages-to-turnover ratio - the highest figure in the Championship.

That means, for every £1 earned by the club, £2.11 was spent on player wages. For context, UEFA recommend a sustainable wages-to-turnover ratio not to exceed 70%.

Despite this, sources close to Swift's camp have conveyed a clear message: the player has little interest in a January move.
