Report: Wes Welker joins 49ers’ coaching staff

It looks like the 49ers made another tweak to their coaching staff. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported Tuesday that Wes Welker was leaving the Texans’ coaching staff to join the 49ers.

It’s also noteworthy that Welker does not appear on a coaching roster distributed by the Texans.

Welker, 37, began his coaching career with the Texans two seasons ago as an offensive and special teams assistant. He spent 12 years in the NFL with the Chargers, Dolphins, Patriots, Broncos and Rams. Welker was a five-time Pro Bowler, a two-time All-Pro, and led the league in receptions three times.

The shifty slot receiver became a favorite target of Tom Brady’s, racking up over 100 catches in five out of six years between 2007 and 2012. San Francisco has a host of receivers who could use Welker’s expertise, assuming he’s working with that position group. His position with the club has not been reported.

Trent Taylor and Richie James are both slot options for the 49ers going into next season. If Welker does work closely with them, both players should benefit from being coached by a player who was so effective in that slot role under future hall-of-fame quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
