According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the Washington Football Team is finalizing a deal to make Marty Hurney their general manager. Hurney was fired by the Carolina Panthers one month ago, about one year removed from the exit of former coach Ron Rivera, who now holds that position in Washington.
In year one under Rivera, the WFT posted a 7-9 record, which was good enough to win them the NFC East and a playoff spot. They were bounced in the Wild Card round by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
While the organization’s ownership is problematic to say the least, the roster holds a lot of promise. Washington has a stout young defense led by a All-Star kind of a defensive line that should only get better. There are also some playmakers on offense like wide receiver Terry McLaurin and tight end Logan Thomas.
The question for Hurney will be deciding what to do at quarterback. Alex Smith is 36 years old and has a history of injuries. Taylor Heinicke has moxy but there’s a reason he’s a backup and Dwayne Haskins is out of the picture. A Cam Newton reunion may be the answer.
