The Golden State Warriors are continuing their efforts to be a part of much needed social change in America.
According to Logan Murdock of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Warriors announced Thursday that they will observe Juneteenth, an important holiday in the Black community. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, but on June 19, 1865, slaves in Texas — who hadn’t heard about the proclamation before — were finally notified they were free.
The Warriors said the organization will observe the holiday “by encouraging active front office staff participation in the ongoing fight for racial justice.” With the Warriors observing Juneteenth, they are one of several NBA teams indicating the day as an important one on their calendars.
According to cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, the Cleveland Cavaliers will also observe Juneteenth. The Philadelphia 76ers, Utah Jazz, Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings and Houston Rockets are some other teams observing the day.
The Warriors being unified as an organization shows how committed they are to helping combat racism and racial injustice.
The players have been an integral part of the franchise’s work in the community. Juan Toscano-Anderson, Steph Curry, Damion Lee and Marquese Chriss have all been at protests in the wake of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor being killed at the hands of police.
