Report: Warriors sign former NBA lottery pick from Sacramento

The Warriors are the fourth team in the last three years to take a chance on Marquese Chriss as they reportedly signed the former lottery pick to a one-year contract.

The 6-foot-10 Chriss, who has mostly disappointed since being the eighth overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft, will join the Warriors for the start of training camp next week, according to Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

Chriss' talent has never been much of a question and he'll be given a chance to compete for the final spot on the Warriors roster. The Warriors' roster currently features seven frontcourt players, including starters Draymond Green and Willie Cauley-Stein as well as Kevon Looney, Alfonzo McKinnie, Omari Spellman and rookie draft picks Alen Smailagic and Eric Paschall.

Because the Warriors' are hard-capped this season after their sign-and-trade for D'Angelo Russell, it's more likely Chriss would be invited to play for their G-League team in Santa Cruz, if he doesn't receive any other offers.

The Sacramento-born Chriss starred at Elk Grove's Pleasant Grove High then played one season at the University of Washington before entering the NBA draft.

Chriss' career has been marked by inconsistencies and charges of lackadaisical play, which helped torpedo his time in Phoenix. He was dealt from the Kings to the Suns on draft night and averaged 9.2 points and 4.2 rebounds while playing in all of Phoenix's 82 games in 2016-17.

His defensive deficiencies limited his playing time in Phoenix in his second season and Chriss wound up being traded to Houston in the Ryan Anderson deal. Last season, Chriss struggled in his playing time over 16 games with the Rockets, who granted his request for a trade.

Chriss joined the Cavaliers in a deal near the trade deadline and he went on to play unevenly over 27 games with Cleveland while averaging 5.7 points in roughly 14 minutes per night.

The Warriors will open their preseason against the Lakers while christening their new Chase Center on Oct. 5.
