Report: Warriors planning to sign guard Quinndary Weatherspoon to two-way contract

After waiving guard Jeff Dowtin Jr. on Sunday, the Golden State Warriors opened a two-way roster spot. The Warriors didn’t waste much time targeting another player for a two-way deal.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Warriors are planning to sign guard Quinndary Weatherspoon with their open two-way contract.

Weatherspoon started the 2021-22 season with Golden State’s G League affiliate in Santa Cruz. Over nine games with Santa Cruz, Weatherspoon averaged 16.1 points on 44.2% shooting from the field with 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.

Prior to joining the Santa Cruz Warriors, Weatherspoon played 31 games in two seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs selected Weatherspoon out of Mississippi State in the second round of the 2019 NBA draft.

With a pair of players in the league’s health and safety protocol, the Warriors added Weatherspoon to the roster with a 10-day hardship exception on Dec. 23.

On Christmas day against the Suns, Weatherspoon made an impact in his debut. The 25-year-old guard tallied six points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from the field with a rebound, block and steal in 14 minutes against the Suns.

Weatherspoon will slide in behind Steph Curry and Jordan Poole in Golden State’s backcourt with Gary Payton II, Damion Lee, Moses Moody and Chris Chiozza.
