Although the longest NBA season in league history came to a close just a handful of days ago, news about the upcoming free agency period is already stirring.
With no invite to the Orlando Bubble, the Golden State Warriors had the opportunity to dive into their offseason plans early. Once the free agency period is underway, the Warriors could be eyeing a veteran big man. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors are expected to have interest in free agent Dwight Howard.
Along with the Warriors, The defending champion Los Angeles Lakers and Howard are also mutually-interested in a deal that would bring the center back to Hollywood, per Charania.
Dwight Howard, who was a pillar to the frontcourt this season, and the Lakers have mutual interest in a deal. Among the contenders also expected to have interest in Howard, sources say: The Golden State Warriors.
During the Lakers run to the title at Disney World, Howard averaged 7.5 points on 72.9% shooting from the field with 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 69 games. After only playing nine games with the Washington Wizards in 2018-19 due to a back injury, the former Defensive Player of the Year bounced back nicely in a limited role alongside JaVale McGee and Anthony Davis in Los Angeles.
Before the Warriors head into free agency, Bob Myers and Steve Kerr will have the chance to land a talented big man prospect like James Wiseman or Onyeka Okongwu with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft.
If the Warriors opt to add a wing when their on the clock in the first round, Howard could be a candidate to come to the Bay Area once free agency begins.
With Marquese Chriss and Kevon Looney listed as options on the depth chart for Golden State’s center position, there are looming question marks about injuries and consistency. The eight-time NBA All-Star could provide a layer of veteran stability to the Warriors frontline.
