With the order set, speculation can begin around the Golden State Warriors’ draft day plans. At the NBA Draft Lottery last week, the Warriors landed the No. 2 overall selection behind the Minnesota Timberwolves. For the first time since 2002, the Warriors will make a selection in the top-five.
Although they’ll be on the clock early in October, the Warriors are in a different position than teams that are typically slotted inside the top-two picks. With Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins on the roster, Bob Myers and Steve Kerr will be challenged with finding a player that can continue to develop while contributing as a rookie.
While the draft has produced Zion Williamson, Ja Morant and Luka Doncic in recent years, the 2020 class lacks a consensus top prospect. Without a headliner, Golden State could narrow their search by position group.
According to Wes Goldberg of the Mercury News, the Warriors view the class of point guards as the strongest position group in the 2020 draft pool.

The Warriors believe guard is the strongest position in this draft. Specifically, point guard. In fact, they would rank the strength of this draft in the following order: guard, forward, then center.
But, as one league executive pointed out, “everyone wants wings.”
LaMelo Ball leads a group of talented point guard prospects that includes Iowa State’s Tyrese Haliburton, France’s Killian Hayes, Alabama’s Kira Lewis and Charleston’s Grant Riller.
With Damion Lee, Jordan Poole and Ky Bowman slated to come off the bench behind Curry; the Warriors could use another option in the backcourt. Myers and Kerr will have until October 16 to continue building Golden State’s draft blueprint.
