Report: Vikings safety Anthony Harris will play 2020 under the franchise tag

Minnesota gave safety Anthony Harris the franchise tag this offseason, and he ended up signing his franchise tender after that.

Harris and the Vikings have until Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT to work out a long-term deal. According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, that long-term deal is not expected to happen before the deadline.

Rapoport said in a tweet that Harris will “play on the tag” for 2020.

“Franchise tag deals have been scarce, and this is another example,” Rapoport said on Twitter.

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin also reported that while there were talks of a long-term deal, nothing materialized.

Harris is at least under contract with the Vikings for the short term, so the team still has two of the better safeties in the NFL on its roster. Harris is coming off a season in which he had six interceptions, tied for a league best.

Harrison Smith, the other starting safety on the Vikings, has made the Pro Bowl every year since 2015. He had three interceptions in 2019.
