Report: Vikings interesting in bringing back Marcus Sherels

We speculated earlier this offseason that the Vikings might not bring back punt returner Marcus Sherels.

It turns out we were wrong.

Per Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press, the Vikings are showing interest in bringing the former Golden Gopher back.

Indications are the #Vikings want to re-sign punt returner Marcus Sherels, who has been with them since 2010. After he had a huge game against Miami in Week 15, he suffered a foot sprain in Week 16 at Detroit and sat out the finale vs. Chicago. But he's fully healthy now.

Sherels, 31, is one of the better punt returners in the league and has been for a while.

He’s been with the Vikings since 2010. His peak was from 2012-16 when he returned five punt returns for touchdowns.

While he didn’t have a touchdown in his 12 games with the team last season, he did bust off a 70-yard return against the Dolphins, giving us hope that the electric and crafty Sherels was still there.

I think it’s a fine move. It feels like the Vikings could get away with using Mike Hughes or Holton Hill as a returner, thus saving a roster spot. But Sherels made just $1.4 million last season and that will likely be the number for 2019 as well. Certainly affordable.
