Report: Vic Fangio officially joining Dolphins after Super Bowl

Vic Fangio has decided to join the Miami Dolphins as their new defensive coordinator after the Super Bowl, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Fangio drew interest from multiple teams as a DC candidate this offseason, including the Denver Broncos.

Fangio, 64, didn’t work out as a head coach with the Broncos, but he is an accomplished defensive coach with an impressive resume. Fangio has been coaching in the NFL since 1986 (with a pit stop at Stanford in 2010), and he has coached some of the league’s top defensive units in recent seasons.

Denver went 19-30 overall under Fangio, but the team’s defense ranked among the league’s top-ten units twice during the coach’s three-year tenure. In 2021, Fangio’s final season with the Broncos, the defense allowed 18.9 points per game, representing the third-best average in the NFL.

Before landing in Denver in 2019, Fangio served as the Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator from 2015-2018. Chicago ranked No. 1 in points allowed in 2018 (17.7).

This year, Fangio served as a defensive consultant with the Philadelphia Eagles, who ranked eighth in points allowed (20.2). Fangio had his faults as a head coach, but his results as a defensive coordinator can’t be questioned.

The Broncos, meanwhile, still have Ejiro Evero under contract. He is expected to meet with new head coach Sean Payton about the possibility of remaining with the team in 2023.
