Report: University of Colorado has made contact with Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy about HC position

The University of Colorado has reached out to Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy about their head coaching position as expected.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Colorado has reached out for the first time since former head coach Mel Tucker left the program for the Michigan State head coaching gig. Schefter claims that this initial contact wasn’t a job offer, but instead Colorado officials gauging the interest of Bieniemy.

While Schefter reports that nothing between the two parties is imminent at this time, Bieniemy is “doing his due diligence” on the head coaching position and a potential return to his alma mater in Boulder, Colorado.

Bieniemy has a longstanding history with Colorado as both a player and a coach. As a player, he is the universities all-time leader in rushing yards (3,940) and rushing touchdowns (41). He served as a running backs coach for the university from 2001-02 and the offensive coordinator from 2011-12 before joining the Chiefs as running backs coach in 2013.

After being a candidate for an NFL head coaching position during the past two offseasons, Bieniemy has little to show for it. He earned a Super Bowl win with the Chiefs in 2019, but there’s no guarantee that would help his head coaching candidacy in the NFL following the 2020 season. Going to Colorado might seem like a step in the wrong direction, but it’s clear that Bieniemy is keeping his options open at this point.
