Report: UGA football LB Brenton Cox’s future with team in jeopardy

Sophomore Georgia football linebacker Brenton Cox’s future in Athens appears to be in serious jeopardy as of Monday.

According to a report from Anthony Dasher of UGASports.com, sources told Radi Nabulsi that Coach Kirby Smart dismissed Cox from the team on Sunday, just one day after the linebacker was seen at fan day signing posters.

However, Dawgs247 is now reporting that the same source previously used mentioned Cox is not yet off the team and nothing has been finalized.

Per these conflicting reports, we will have to wait for further word regarding Cox, as we cannot confirm or deny his current fate with the team.

The 6’4″, 235-pound Stockbridge High School product was reportedly dismissed on Sunday evening, though there is no immediate reason yet as to why.

Cox was arrested back in April for possession of Marijuana with fellow Bulldog linebacker Robert Beal, but it is unknown whether the drug has any correlation to the five-star’s current situation.

At Monday’s annual media availability with the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator, Dan Lanning was asked what he expects out of Cox this fall.

Lanning’s response quickly sparked speculation just minutes before word got out of the linebacker’s potential dismissal from the team.

Cox is expected to play a significant role on the Georgia defense this season after recording 20 tackles in his freshman campaign.

We will continue to monitor this story as it develops and provide you with more details once we get them.
