The U.S. Open, scheduled for June 18-21 at the Winged Foot Golf Club, has been postponed, according to the New York Post.
The New York Post reported on Thursday night that the U.S. Open will be be postponed from its June date at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., and played later in the summer.
City sources “with knowledge of the United States Golf Association’s plans,” the Post said the USGA has informed Winged Foot officials that the tournament won’t be played June 18-21. The course was closed earlier this week because of an order by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to shut down all non-essential businesses in the state because of the coronavirus.
Construction of facilities and other preparations for the Open halted at that point.
The Open joins the Masters and the PGA Championship in being postponed from their original dates. The Masters, set for April 9-12 at the Augusta National Golf Club, has reportedly been re-scheduled for October and the PGA, set for May 14-17 at the TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, could be played during the late July, early August slot that was to have been occupied by Olympic golf.
The Olympics were postponed to next year.
″[We] remain hopeful about late in the summer, [maybe] early September,″ the source told the Post about the U.S. Open.
The source also said the club is “optimistic″ the tournament will remain at Winged Foot.
The USGA would not confirm moving the tournament.
“Nothing is official at this point,″ Beth Major, the USGA’s senior director of championship communications, told The Post. “Obviously, we’re talking about it, knowing what’s going on in New York right now.″
The USGA had previously said it would make a decision on the U.s. Open by the middle of April.
“We said, ‘middle of April and no later,’ ″ Major told the Post. “But [a decision] could come earlier, which for all of us would be great so we can go on with the plans.″
The last time professional golf at the highest level was played was the first round of The Players Championship on March 12, at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. The Tour made the decision to cancel the rest of the tournament that night, and has since cancelled eight subsequent events.
