Report: Tyreek Hill’s agent is at Chiefs training camp discussing extension

This is the type of news that Chiefs fans want to hear about Tyreek Hill today.

Contract negotiations have been set to resume between Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and the Chiefs, since Hill made his return to the team. Now it appears those talks will pick up as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Rosenhaus has been spotted in St. Joseph, Missouri, where the Chiefs have their training camp practices.

Before Hill was accused of child abuse, there were reports that said the Chiefs were prepared to make him the highest-paid receiver in the NFL. The Chiefs front office considers Hill to be one of the most important pieces to their recent wave of offensive success, and it seems they were once willing to compensate him as such.

How will the situation that unfolded over the course of the offseason impact contract negotiations between Rosenhaus and the Chiefs regarding Hill?

The NFL left open the possibility of reopening Hill’s investigation if new information ever came to light. That could certainly impact how the Chiefs structure Hill’s contract moving forward. It could lead to language in the contract where guaranteed money voids based on fines or suspensions from the league. Will Rosenhaus and Hill be agreeable to that type of language, though?

Keep in mind that the franchise tag number should be somewhere around $18 million for receivers next year. That’ll likely be the starting point in negotiations, regardless of what has played out this offseason. I’d still expect Hill to make money that places him among the top-paid receivers in the NFL.

The sooner that the Chiefs sign Hill to a deal, the better for them. A contract between the Saints and their star WR Michael Thomas could potentially alter the equation.

It’ll be interesting to see how close they are on a deal and how quickly things might happen in this scenario.
