Up until now, we haven’t gotten any real details about what the Tennessee Titans are offering running back Derrick Henry in contract negotiations.
However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Titans have offered Henry a deal in the ballpark of two franchise tags.
“My understanding is those two sides have remained in contact,” Rapoport explained. “There have been offers. The Titans have tried to lock Henry in long-term, offering a deal somewhat based around basically two franchise tags would be, maybe a little bit more. No traction yet. This is not something he’s shown signs of taking. So, potentially he’d play on the one-year deal.”
As Rapoport notes, Henry clearly isn’t open to taking that deal; although we still don’t know exactly what the Alabama product is looking for.
A deal worth two franchise tags would be about $22.6 million over two years, as the 2020 franchise tag is worth $10.278 million and the 2021 franchise tag will cost around $12.33 million.
Henry and the Titans have until 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday to get something done, or else the star running back will be forced to play the upcoming season on the one-year tag.
That means Henry will be set to hit the open market again in 2021, unless of course the Titans once again utilize the franchise tag.
Henry led the NFL in rushing in 2019, and then went on to carry the Titans through the first two rounds of the playoffs before Tennessee ultimately fell one game short of the Super Bowl in the AFC Championship Game.
