Report: Titans’ Jack Conklin not expected to sign with Jets

Refuting an earlier report from Pro Football Talk, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Tennessee Titans right tackle Jack Conklin is not expected to sign with the New York Jets.

As is obviously the case given the high demand for quality offensive linemen, Conklin is going to have a lot of interest if he hits the open market, and the Jets could certainly be one of those teams.

However, because he’s one of the best offensive linemen on the market following a rebound season, he could become the highest-paid player at his position in the sport and that could lead to some teams shying away.

The only ways the Titans can prevent Conklin from becoming a free agent is to either sign him or franchise tag him. Once franchise tagged, Conklin could be traded, which would be a great way to get something for him if there is no intent to bring him back.

Neither scenario is likely, though, as Conklin would be wise to create a bidding war for his services by hitting the open market and the Titans might look to use the franchise tag on either Ryan Tannehill or Derrick Henry.

Tennessee could also use the transition tag, which would allow Conklin to negotiate with other teams but give the Titans a chance to match any offer sheet he signs.

If Tennessee decides not to give Conklin the kind of payday he’s likely to demand, re-signing Dennis Kelly to start on the right side is the next best option.
