Report: the Lions will sign safety Andrew Adams to a 1-year deal

Dave Birkett of the Free Press is reporting that the Detroit Lions will sign safety Andrew Adams to a 1-year deal.

Adams went undrafted in 2016 out of Connecticut and signed with the New York Giants. After a brief stint on their practice squad, he was activated to the roster and eventually inserted into the starting lineup, finishing off the season with 13 starts at single-high safety. Adams would start another four games for the Giants in 2017.

In 2018, Adams was released by the Giants at the regular season cut downs, eventually signing with the Tampa Bay Bucs, playing in 13 games with four starts.

“Adams is at his best playing a deep, centerfielder-type role,” Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon reported. “The Lions did see him up close and personal during the joint practice sessions in Allen Park with the Giants last summer.”

Lions general manager Bob Quinn said he is looking to add playmakers to the defense this offseason and Adams’ four interceptions and nine passes deflected last season puts him that in that category:

Adams is also a standout on special teams which will surely help his cause for making the Lions final roster, but he will face competition from veteran box safety Tavon Wilson, free safety/special teamer Charles Washington, free safety David Jones and a potential addition in the NFL draft.
