The Big Ten Conference will not play any intercollegiate sports this fall, including football. That’s the latest report coming from multiple outlets, including several Big Ten-based publications and nationally syndicated radio programs.
The curtain has fallen on the college football season in one of the sport’s biggest draws before it ever lifted.
The presidents of the member universities agreed to cancel the recently updated schedule due to ongoing concerns over the logistics and logic of playing a contact sport during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The university presidents voted 12-2 to cancel the fall season, with Iowa and Nebraska the member schools who voted to play according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.
A formal announcement is expected on Tuesday.
This follows the Mid-American Conference officially canceling football last week. The Big Ten is still considering the potential of playing football in the spring. Several prominent Big Ten players, including Purdue WR Rondale Moore and Penn State LB Micah Parsons, have already indicated they are sitting out and will prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft.
