Days after Texas A&M's last-minute loss to UCLA in the season opener, coach Kevin Sumlin received a threatening piece of mail with a racial slur, according to a report.
Per GridironNow.com's Rachel Baribeau, Sumlin's family received mail that said the following: "You suck as a coach! You're a (expletive) and can't win! Please get lost! or else"
Sumlin came under additional scrutiny this week after UCLA's 34-point comeback win in the season-opening game. Immediately following the loss, Texas A&M board of regent Tony Buzbee issued a statement saying he planned on voting for Sumlin's dismissal. Sumlin's contract expires at the end of the 2019 season.
The tweet from Baribeau appears to be a draft from the account of Sumlin's wife. No name was listed on the piece of racist mail. The listed return address is the Houston Country Club. HCC was not immediately available for comment.
Despite grumblings about Sumlin, notably, the annual eight-win season, there's the matter of his contract. Two years remain after this season, at $5 million per. Unless Buzbee is willing to kick in, who's footing the rest of that?
Even if money's not a problem, the rest of this season remains in play, despite Sunday's collapse.
"I'm not in the business of really paying attention to anything outside of this program, or comments, good or bad," Sumlin said. "My focus is on what we can do to be better."
