Report: Texans wanted Kellen Mond, but Vikings took him first

The Vikings made an interesting choice when the team drafted Kellen Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft.

As it turns out, the Texans were going to make a pretty similar decision, according to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. Tomasson reported that Houston had reached out to Mond to tell him that the Texans were taking the quarterback.

Minnesota, however, had the 66th pick, and the Vikings of course nabbed Mond before Houston could take him at No. 67. From Tomasson:

“(There was a) phone call from his agent, text message, and the agent said, ‘Hey, the Houston Texans are getting ready to select (Mond) at pick 67,’ ” Mond’s father, Kevin, said. “So, we’re sitting (at the San Antonio family home) on the couch and (Mond) gets the phone call a couple of minutes later and it’s a team.”

This kind of seems like a missed opportunity for Mond. With the Texans, he would have had a chance to start as soon as 2021. Houston’s starting quarterback, Deshaun Watson, is facing sexual assault allegations from 22 women rolled into one lawsuit.

With the Vikings, though, Mond will have to sit and wait for his turn. Maybe that will be better for his development in the long run. But as of now, Kirk Cousins is the team’s quarterback. Let’s see if that changes in the coming years.
