Report: Texans to sign returner Andre Roberts

The Houston Texans continue to hit their singles and doubles in free agency, just as general manager Nick Caserio said they would.

According to Adam Caplan, the Texans are expected to sign three-time Pro Bowl returner Andre Roberts, who spent the last two seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

Tom Pelissero from the NFL Network says the offer is a two-year contract worth up to $5.95 million.

If the Texans are going after Roberts, 33, it indicates they recognize they will need to gain an edge in the transition phase of the game. Roberts averaged 30.0 yards per kickoff return in 2020, and he also averaged 9.9 yards per punt with the AFC East winners.

“A top-notch return man, no doubt,” Bills Wire managing editor Nick Wojton said. “Earned those back-to-back Pro Bowls. Led the NFL in yards per kick return just last season. Despite that, he somehow managed to next take one to the house. Awfully close several times. Wouldn’t count on him contributing as a wide receiver much at all.”

The former Arizona, Washington, Detroit, and Atlanta player had his best season with the New York Jets in 2018. The 5-11, 195-pound returner returned a punt and a kickoff each for a touchdown and led the NFL with a 14.1 yards per punt return. Roberts’ kickoff return average was also 29.4 yards per return.
