REPORT: Texans sign QB Alex McGough to practice squad after teams ‘aggressively’ recruited him

Duval fan-favorite Alex McGough won’t be returning to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster for the 2019 regular season, not even as a practice squad member. Instead, he’ll be signing with their division rivals in the Houston Texans who were one of several teams that “aggressively” recruited the young quarterback per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Wilson also reported that the Texans will be paying the young quarterback a weekly salary of 20k while on their practice squad this football season.

McGough, 23, had two of the Jags’ three touchdowns this preseason after rushing for one against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons. He wasn’t as impressive as a passer though, going 11-of-29 (37.9 percent) for 60 yards, an interception and two rushing touchdowns throughout the preseason. Still, he had some tools in which the Jags could’ve worked with and many fans preferred him over No. 2 quarterback Gardner Minshew.

It’s unclear if the Jags were one of the teams chasing McGough for their practice squad, but if they were, evidently they weren’t aggressive enough. Now, they’ll be left to search for a new practice squad quarterback as they currently have four spots available on the unit.
