Report: Texans shopping CB Kevin Johnson for a trade

Second-year general manager Brian Gaine is not afraid of making moves for the Houston Texans. Last off season, Gaine signed free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu to a one-year prove it deal and Gaine also traded for Demaryius Thomas in season when Will Fuller went down with an ACL injury in Week 8.

Fast forward to the 2019 offseason and reports are saying that Gaine and Texans are looking at trying to trade often injured Kevin Johnson.

The former first round pick has not exactly been great for Houston. Playing in just 16 games once in 2015 Johnson’s rookie year and only started in 10 of those games. Since then the former Wake Forest defensive back played in just 18 games from 2016-2018.

Johnson has struggle not only with injuries but on the field as well. Only notching one interception in his three year career the former first rounder seems to be lost on the field on certain plays. Last season we saw safety Mathieu give Johnson an earful after a miscommunication on the field in Week 1 at the New England Patriots.

The Texans may not be getting much in return for Johnson but at this point you have to try. Due $9 million and this being in his last year of his current deal, a late round pick may be on the table from teams that are in need of cornerback help.

If the Texans were to move on from Johnson, it would not cost them any dead money. In essence, not finding a way to move on from Johnson and preserve the club’s salary cap space would be a dereliction of duty, something Gaine can’t be accused of since taking the desk as general manager.
