Report: Texans QB Deshaun Watson and Ravens WR coach David Culley already have good rapport

Why exactly are the Houston Texans interviewing a 65-year-old receivers coach to be the man on the sidelines when he has never even been a coordinator in the NFL?

Could it be the Texans are doing whatever it takes to keep their franchise quarterback happy and settled down?

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Culley, who has a second interview with the Texans Wednesday for the coaching job, developed a good rapport with quarterback Deshaun Watson this same time a year ago in Orlando, Fla., for the 2020 Pro Bowl. The receivers coach and the now-three-time Pro Bowl signal caller were able to forge a “good connection” ahead of the all-star game.

If the Texans go with Culley, it means that offensive coordinator Tim Kelly’s job may be safe. Culley would also be the third offensive-minded hire the Texans have made for the top job. The only defensive-minded coach Houston hired was Dom Capers in 2002. Since then, Gary Kubiak, Bill O’Brien, and presumable Culley, are all offensive-minded coaches.

On Tuesday, the Texans also have a second interviewed scheduled with Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, whose team was bounced out of the AFC Championship Game Sunday 38-24 at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs.
