Report: Texans promote WR Steven Mitchell to active roster

Amid a hamstring injury that will sideline Will Fuller for several weeks, the Texans are promoting wide receiver Steven Mitchell from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Mitchell, 25, played at USC before signing with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted rookie. He spent most of his rookie season with the Texans practice squad while suiting up for the regular-season closer.

Mitchell measures in at 5-10, 189-pounds. He ran a 4.56-second 40-yard-dash at the 2018 NFL Combine.

Houston released Mitchell during the cut-down day (Aug. 31st), then promptly added him to the practice squad. During training camp and preseason, coach Bill O’Brien gave him snaps as a returner.

“He’s done a lot of things better,” said O’Brien of Mitchell during training camp. “He’s gotten better at wide receiver. He’s played a lot of different positions, outside, inside. He’s working his butt off on special teams. He’s a great guy, love having him around, very competitive guy.”

The Texans will have to make another roster move to fit Mitchell into their 53-man roster.
