Report: Texans hiring former Chargers OL coach James Campen

The Houston Texans continue to make changes to their coaching staff under new coach David Culley.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are hiring former Los Angeles Chargers offensive line coach James Campen for the same job in Houston. The 56-year-old will be under contract with the Texans for the next three years.

Campen doesn’t have an overt connection to Culley, but he was on the staff with the Chargers last year when current quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton served in the same capacity for Los Angeles.

The former offensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers got his start in coaching in 2004 with the Packers as an assistant offensive line and quality control coach. Campen dropped the quality control aspect in 2006, and was later the offensive line coach from 2007-17. In 2018, he was the offensive line coach and run game coordinator in the last season for coach Mike McCarthy.

In 2019, Campen was the associated head coach and offensive line coach on Freddie Kitchens’ staff.

Campen takes over for Mike Devlin, who had been the offensive line coach for the Texans since 2015.
