The Houston Texans may use their first pick of the 2020 NFL Draft on a tight end.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the AFC South champions have strong interest in former Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet, who reportedly isn’t expecting to drop past Houston.
The Texans have the 40th overall pick in the second round.
If the Texans use their second-round selection on a tight end, it will be a very curious pick as they already have a third-rounder from a year ago in Kahale Warring, a 2018 third-rounder in Jordan Akins, and recently re-signed Darren Fells, who was tied with receiver DeAndre Hopkins for the most touchdown receptions on the team with seven.
2018 sixth-round pick Jordan Thomas was already unsafe as it was heading into the team’s offseason workouts, whenever the NFL allows them to go forward due to COVID-19 concerns. Adding Kmet would certainly indicate Thomas’ time with the Texans is coming to a close, but it would also beg the question of who else would join him. Investing a second-round pick in a tight end means that pick carries the expectation of becoming a starter in the next couple of seasons.
