Report: Texans drop LB Chase Middleton, add LB Xavier Woodson-Luster

The Houston Texans have added linebacker Xavier Woodson-Luster following a tryout at rookie minicamp.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, to make the corresponding move, the Texans released linebacker Chase Middleton, an undrafted free agent from Georgia State.

Woodson-Luster played college football at Arkansas State and went undrafted in 2017. The 6-1, 220-pound linebacker caught on with the Oakland Raiders but was eventually cut from the team leading up to Week 16 of that season.

The familiarity Woodson-Luster has with the Texans is through general manager Brian Gaine. In 2017, Gaine spent one season with the Buffalo Bills as their vice president of player personnel. With a week to go in the regular season, Woodson-Luster was signed to the Bills’ practice squad. Eventually, he would stick around with the team while Gaine took the GM job in Houston, but Woodson-Luster would be cut from Buffalo following the mandatory 53-man cut down leading into the 2018 regular season.

The former Red Wolf spent his 2018 season being promoted to the Cleveland Browns’ active roster and then demoted back to the practice squad. Cleveland parted ways with Woodson-Luster on May 6.

For his career, Woodson-Luster has collected 12 tackles in 18 games.
