Report: Texans DE J.J. Watt leads NFL defensive players in social media engagements

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is the most engaging defensive player in the NFL on social media.

According to a report from Opendorse, Watt had 44.7 million engagements on Twitter and Instagram combined, placing seventh in the entire NFL and the most among defensive players. Coming in second on the defensive side of the ball was the Denver Broncos’ Von Miller with 14.3 million engagements.

The bulk of Watt’s engagements come from Instagram, where he had 31.6 million engagements, the eighth-most on the platform. On Twitter, Watt had 13.1 million, which were second only to Pittsburgh Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster’s 14.3 million.

Watt has the most Twitter followers of anyone in the NFL at 11.0 million. However, on Instagram, he has 7.3 million, the fifth-most behind Odell Beckham, Tom Brady, Cam Newton, and Russell Wilson.

The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year’s follower growth has included a little over 887,200 followers during the report’s time frame of Aug. 26, 2018, to Aug. 26, 2019.
