Report: Texans CB Phillip Gaines to undergo season-ending ankle surgery

Houston Texans cornerback Phillip Gaines will undergo season-ending surgery on his ankle, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Gaines, 28, suffered a severe high-ankle sprain late in Sunday’s 30-23 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He will be placed on injured reserve with a five-month timetable to return.

The Texans signed the former Houston Cougar after releasing slot cornerback Aaron Colvin following their Week 1 30-28 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He signed a one-year deal and previously played for the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs.

To negate the loss of Gaines, the Texans traded a third-round selection to the Oakland Raiders for 24-year-old cornerback Gareon Conley.

With Gaines on injured reserve, the Texans have Conley, Johnathan Joseph, Bradley Roby, Lonnie Johnson, Keion Crossen and Xavier Crawford as their cornerbacks. Roby is expected to be out for two more weeks with a hamstring, while Joseph and Crossen are nursing injuries sustained on Sunday.
