Top-flight football could reportedly return “within weeks” - although the English Football League season would “likely” restart after that.
Nottingham Forest’s Championship promotion push is on hold after games were brought to a halt last month due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sabri Lamouchi’s Reds sit fifth in the second tier table with nine matches remaining.
The Sun claim completing the Premier League campaign is seen as a priority “as it would allow the transfer window to open and enable money to trickle down the football pyramid”.
The report says Prime Minister Boris Johnson sees resuming live sport as key to giving public morale a boost and he has “been briefed on plans for matches to be played behind closed doors”.
It is said Premier League football “could be back on TV within weeks”.
“Government insiders said it was likely that the EFL would start later because of the logistical and financial challenges,” the report adds.
However, it is stressed that first the Government would have to meet the five points set out for easing lockdown restrictions and “sports would have to meet a strict set of criteria, including being able to maintain social distancing and keeping all involved safe from infection”.
The Sun say: “There would have to be regular testing of participants — paid for by clubs or the sport’s chiefs so as not to block frontline workers.
“The issue will be on the table when ministers review the current set of social distancing measures ahead of the next review on May 7.”
